To successfully keep angelfish in a community tank, pair them with peaceful, medium-sized fish like corydoras, larger tetras, or gouramis that occupy different water levels. Avoid tiny fish that can be swallowed or aggressive fin-nippers that will cause severe stress to your angelfish.

Angelfish are cichlids, meaning they possess a semi-aggressive nature and a natural predatory instinct. In our experience working with hundreds of community setups, we've seen that adult angelfish will happily eat anything that fits into their mouths. Furthermore, their long, flowing fins make them easy targets for notorious fin-nipping fish, which can lead to infection and extreme stress. To ensure your fish are guaranteed healthy on arrival and survive long-term, picking the right tank mates is essential.
When testing various combinations in our facility, our standard procedure is to choose fish that are peaceful, fast enough to escape occasional chases, and large enough not to be considered food.
We advise against adding known fin-nippers such as Tiger Barbs or Serpae Tetras. Additionally, small species like young Guppies or micro-rasboras will eventually become a quick snack for a fully grown angelfish.
Few fish can match the majestic presence of a fully grown angelfish gliding gracefully through a planted tank. By carefully selecting the right schooling companions and bottom dwellers, you can easily build a stunning, balanced underwater ecosystem that feels alive and peaceful.
